Farol de Point Higuero

Há vários anos tive a boa fortuna de visitar a ilha de Porto Rico. Esta pequena aguarela é baseada no Farol de Point Higuero, Parque de El Faro na ponta Noroeste da ilha.


Several years ago I was lucky enough to visit the Island of Puerto Rico. This small watercolor shows the Point Higuero Light in the Northwest corner of the island.

Paços do Concelho, Sintra

Este edifício foi projectado por Adães Bermudes e acabou de ser construído em 1908.

É apenas uma entre tantas belezas arquitectónicas que se podem encontrar nesta vila tão pitoresca.

This building (the local City Hall) was designed by Adães Bermudes and was built in 1908. It is just one among so many architectural beauties to be found in this picturesque village.

A Casa Barbosa

Esta casa pertence á família Barbosa cujo patriarca, Luís Barbosa foi um grande violinista português. Os seus filhos Vasco e Grazi seguiram nas pégadas do pai e tornaram-se em músicos de renome internacional. Eu não sei os detalhes, mas esta família decidiu há muitos anos adquirir uma casa de férias na minha pequena aldeia de Póvoa da Pégada na Beira Alta. Lembro-me do entusiasmo que eu e os meus amigos de infância sentia-mos quando no verão a família chegava para as suas merecidas férias. Porquê? Porque a mãe de Vasco e Grazi, a “Dona Ema” era uma senhora muito bondosa que sempre distribuía brinquedos ou guloseimas pelas crianças da aldeia…incluíndo eu, claro está. Pela minha parte aqui deixo uma modesta homenagem a esta família.

This house belongs to the Barbosa family. Its patriarch, Luís Barbosa was a great portuguese violinist. His children Vasco and Grazi, followed in his footsteps and became musicians of international renown. Many years ago the family acquired a Summer house in my home town in Beira Alta. I remember when I was a young boy, how excited I and my friends were when the family came to town in the summer. Why ? because Vasco and Grazi’s mother, “Dona Ema” was a very kind lady who always distributed toys and other treats among the children of the village…including yours truly. This painting is a very modest homage to this family, with best wishes.

Praça de Dom Duarte, Viseu

Ok, hoje por quarquer razao, nao posso copiar texto com acentos portugueses. Terei que investigar este problema. Aqui vai mesmo sem acentos...

Sempre me senti tentado a pintar este lugar. Ele retem todas as suas caracteristicas medievais e tenho visto muitas e belas pinturas deste lugar tao lindo.
Essa minha pintura tera' que esperar. Entretanto fiz este rapido esboco para ensaio.

I always felt an itch to paint this place. After all, it retains all its medieval charm, and I have seen many great paintings of this beautiful place.
That painting of mine will have to wait. In the meantime, I did this quick sketch to plan out my strategy.

Serra da Estrela

A Serra da Estrela é, claro está, a mais alta montanha em Portugal...continental como notou o meu amigo Luis Bonito...o Pico, nos Açores é mais alto.
Lembro-me do seu manto de neve nos meus Invernos infantis. Esta perspectiva é vista da aldeia de Laceiras em médio plano.

The “Serra da Estrela” (Mountain of the Star) is, of course, the highest mountain in mainland Portugal...only the Pico, (the Peak) on the Islands of Azores, is taller. I remember its snow cover from my childhood winters. This view is from the village of Laceiras, which appears in the middle ground.

Dólmen da Orca

Esta estrutura megalítica fica perto de Fiais da Telha na minha província natal, a Beira Alta. Foi pintada a partir de uma fotografia cedida pela minha prima, a Sofia. Obrigado Sofia.

This structure from megalithic times is near Fiais da Telha in Beira Alta, the province where I was born. This painting is based on a photo kindly provided by my cousin Sofia. Thank you Sofia.

Mosteiro de Santa Maria da Flor de Rosa (Crato)

Este muito antigo mosteiro está agora transformado numa pousada. A transformação foi óbviamente feita com muito cuidado para preservar a carácter medieval desta estrutura.

This ancient monastery has been converted in a Pousada. Pousadas are typically upscale hotels inside old castles, monasteries and the like. As in this case, the conversion is very carefully planned so as to preserve the character and setting of the original structure.

Arco do Triunfo da Rua Augusta

Este monumento quase que não precisa de introdução. Separa (e une) a Praça do Comércio - mais conhecida como Terreiro do Paço – com a Rua Augusta na Baixa de Lisboa. Foi construído durante a renovação desta área depois do terramoto de 1755 promovida pelo Marquês de Pombal.

For Portuguese people, this monument needs no introduction. It is located in the Terreiro do Paço, a vast and beautiful square in Lisbon, connecting it to the Rua Augusta. This whole area was completely re-designed and re-built by the Marquês de Pombal after the devastation of the 1755 earthquake.

Este promontório fica junto á Praia de Carvoeiro no Algarve.

This promontory is located next to the village and beach of Carvoeiro in the Southern province of Algarve.

Casa Amarela, Beijós

Durante a minha excursão ao Bairro dos Moleiros no ano passado, reparei nesta bela casa senhorial na Rua Abade Pais Pinto em Beijós perto de onde esta se encontra com a Rua da Igreja. Ainda que o exterior esteja a precisar de uma nova pintura, a beleza da casa é ainda bastante evidente. Esta aguarela mostra apenas a ponta Sul do longo edifício.

While I visited Portugal last year, I noticed this stately old house in Beijós, Beira Alta.
Although in need of a facelift, I thought the beauty of the original building still came through.

Cabo Espichel

Continuando num dos meus temas favoritos…achei este farol muito parecido com o Farol da Guia em Cascais. Fica perto de Sesimbra, uma hora a Sul de Lisboa.

Continuing with one of my favorite subjects…I think this lighthouse is very similar to the Guia Light in Cascais. This one is near Sesimbra, about an hour South of Lisbon.

Ensaio de Céu – Sky Study

Este farol é –caso raro para mim – completamente imaginário. Ainda que o enquadramento é misteriosamente semelhante ao do farol do cabo de São Vicente…mas vamos adiante.
O farol é uma âncora apenas para esta experiência baseada numa fotografia do céu que tirei há duas semanas no meu quintal depois do Pôr-do-Sol olhando para Leste ou seja o Nascente.
Estou muito mais satisfeito com a fotografia do que com o ensaio.

This lighthouse is – unusually for me – completely imaginary. Although the setting appears suspiciouly similar to Cape St Vincent…but let’s move on. The lighthouse is just an anchor for this experimental sky based on a photograph I took a couple weeks ago in my backyard just after sunset and looking towards the East, opposite to the sunset. I am a lot happier with the photo than with the study.

O Castelo data dos princípios do Século XIII e fica perto do Rio Tejo na área de Gavião, Alto Alentejo.

This Castle dates from the Thirteenth Century and is located near the Tagus River in Alto (Upper) Alentejo.

Farol de Gibalta

Este Farol é um pouco difícil de fotografar por estar muito perto da congestionada estrada marginal na área de Oeiras. Pensando mais, e a julgar por mais este esboço apressado, parece também difícil de pintar…

This Lighthouse is difficult to photograph because it is very close to the busy coastal road near Oeiras, just West of Lisbon. On second thought, and judging by this rushed sketch, it appears that it is also difficult to paint…

Póvoa da Pégada

A Rua Padre Filipe na Póvoa da Pégada aparece aqui novamente, na direção Sul. A casa a médio plano no centro direito da imagem era antigamente chamada “A Televisão”. Isto é porque ela servia como centro comunitário onde os habitantes se podiam dar ao luxo de assistir aos programas da RTP no único televisor que então existia na aldeia. Infelizmente a casa está agora muito degradada, e só posso esperar que com alguma sorte, seja um dia recuperada.

This is another view of Póvoa, my hometown in Northern Portugal. The house on the center right middleground was –many years ago – used as community center where everyone could watch TV on the only set in existence in the entire village.
Sadly, it is now in serious disrepair, and I hope that with a little luck it will be one day recuperated for some other public need.

São Brás de Alportel

Esta casa chamou-me a atenção pela sua alvura e bouganvilea. Fica no Algarve onde muitos Portugueses e outros Europeus gostam de passar as suas férias de Verão na praia. Eu próprio não me importaria nada de o fazer agora –o Verão ainda não acabou – mas terei que esperar até outro dia.

Noutro tópico, eu quero agradecer ao Kontrastes.org pela distinção que generosamente deu a este meu modesto sítio de "Blogue da Semana" . E pelo interesse neste seu autor, que originou uma pequena entrevista por email que se pode encontrar aqui. Muitos agradecimentos.

This house caught my attention with its whitewashed walls and blooming bouganvilea. It is in the Algarve, the southern province where many Portuguese and other Europeans like to spend their Summer vacation on the beach. I myself would not mind doing it right now – it’s still Summer – but I will have to wait for another day.

A Câmara

Isto é…a Câmara Municipal de Sommerville, uma localidade rural nesta área de Tennessee. Este é um muito pequeno trabalho num dos meus cadernos de esboços feito em 2006. Como eu fiquei muito satisfeito com este resultado decidi roubá-lo ao meu outro blog e incluí-lo aqui.

This old building is the City Hall in Sommerville a small town here in Tennessee. It is actually a very small sketch in one of my sketchbooks. I was very happy with this result, so I decided to steal it from my other blog and include it here.
